Perfect or Finished?

Here is the finished troll I was working on. This is really the first time I was trying to go for little more realism in one of my figures. My quandary became do I make it perfect or do I complete it? Many of the details like his hands and feet had me really stumped. I got some extra tutorials and did several test ones. I started to see some improvement but not what I wanted. The question in front of me was do I keep trying or should I just finish this piece, even if it wasn't perfect.

I wound up letting frustration get the better of me. The hands and feet weren't what I wanted them to be, as well as several other parts, even though I knew learning to sculpt realistic hands takes practice. Do I wait or do I keep plugging on even though I knew the result wasn't going to be perfect?

I decided on imperfection. It meant I had to keep pushing on and working for the best I had to give now rather than waiting until I had all the components right. I know a lot of artists don't like doing that, I figure I would complete it and get that satisfaction for  now.

Waves of Blue

My favorite color schemes are always analogous - just shades of related colors. It is was too hot to move today but I started playing my beads. I have way to many but nothing really fancy, mostly glass and some inexpensive crystals and fresh water pearls. I just wanted to play around. I found some memory wire lying around and decided to just string beads to make a bracelet, later I made a matching necklace.

I love the random look of the colors and shapes - the beads are from all over, even other jewelry. The light blue stones actually can from a cheap bracelet I bought last year on the street in NY.  It was about 3 dollars but the stones were pretty and of course it broke right away.

So I tossed everything together and except for having to go buy memory wire for the necklace, about $3, I now have a pretty summery jewelry set to wear whose colors and shapes inspire me to play with more colors and shapes.

Making a Troll - WIP

[caption id="attachment_1186" align="aligncenter" width="279"] Troll - work in progress[/caption]

I've been fiddling around with different things recently, really feeling around for what I really want to be doing, more than what will just what will sell. I have been doing things all over the board and never really focusing on one thing. That is my goal for this summer. I enjoy color, miniatures, and sculpting. I have always loved doing figures the best so trying some more realistic figures.

These take a little more effort than just a simple piece and I can't do it one sitting. I really need more practice with these but this one has been very satisfying to make. So far only the torso has been baked. I am still struggling with hands. They are tricky and Prosculpt seems to get too soft too quickly. I ordered some Cernit for the next one. Yes already I know I want to do more to perfect this. Stay tuned for the next steps.

Lindly's IKAT Workshop

What a weekend!!! I am just home after a two day class with Lindly Haunai. She co-authored Polymer Clay Color Inspirations and is a master at color. We focused on color while making IKAT canes. IKAT is based on the fabric IKAT and tends to look like a woven fabric.

All these canes were made with a magenta, yellow, blue, black and white. Had to believe isn't it. I may never need to buy anything but these again. Maybe some different shades of yellow and blue and fluorescent pink but that is about it. Now what to do with the tons of clay I already own? I guess I have to use that up first.

Set 5: Pop Tart Earring

[caption id="attachment_1144" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Strawberry Poptart Earring"]Polymer Clay Strawberry Poptart Earrings[/caption]

What is a better way to start your day than with Pop Tarts? Actually S'mores pop tarts are my favorite to eat but the strawberry ones are prettier.  I added bite marks and a little bit of filling where the bites are. I had fun making miniatures like this again. I haven't done them in a while.

So far that is my favorite part of this challenge - having to produce something and something different. I haven't kept up with the time line but I am continuing.
